Getting a Cheap PC

In the case that you are only interested in playing cheap PC games, then there is no reason to get an expensive computer.  There are desktops out there that have amazing specifications and can run the most intensive of games, but some people do not need that much.  For those that will not run powerful applications on their computer, a cheap PC is good enough.

When deciding what kind of personal computer to get, you need to think what you are going to use it for.  If you are only going to play cheap PC games and write word documents, then you do not need anything fancy.  What determines how good a computer is are the parts inside it, as well as the software.  If the computer has a lot of RAM, high quality graphics and sound cards, and a quality operating system, then it will be quite expensive.  In regards to speed, a Windows 98 computer could be almost as fast as Vista as long as it had enough RAM, but it would not be able to run modern software.  That is why the operating system you choose is important as well.

You can find cheap personal computers basically anywhere.  On the Internet, it is easy to find people who are trying to get rid of an old computer because they just got a new one, or something along those lines.  You can take advantage of these deals and save a lot of money, and it sure is better than going to a store, where you will ultimately have to pay much more.

Most people associate cheap PCs with slowness, but as stated above, that is not necessarily correct.  Your PC might be able to go pretty fast, but depending on the software installed on it, it might not be able to run certain programs.  As long as the PC has an adequate amount of RAM, you can avoid problems like the system freezing up or crashing.

The technology that humanity has developed is incredible, and with it, gaming has reached a level never seen before in history.  New games run amazing graphics and have incredible gameplay, but for this extravagance, there is a price, literally.  For game consoles like the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, not only is there the cost for the system, but each game costs between sixty and seventy dollars.  You can save money if you buy the games used or online, but the expense is still relatively great, especially for someone who does not have a large amount of dispensable income.  That is why cheap PC games should be considered, as they have benefits as well.

Nobody is going to argue that cheap PC games can reach the caliber that more expensive games have, but that does not have anything to do with the level of fun.  There are people out there who would prefer Tetris over Half-Life, even though the former is much less sophisticated than the latter.  What it really comes down to is the amount of fun you can derive from the product, and if you have fun with a cheap computer game, then that is what matters.

That is not to say that all PC games are like Tetris.  There are some pretty advanced games out there that cost between ten and twenty dollars, or less depending on how old it is.  Back in the early 2000s, there were pretty great games out there that would run for only about five bucks nowadays.  Also, because they are old, you can be sure that they will run very quickly on your computer, so you do not have to worry about it freezing up.  With more graphic-intensive games, this can be a serious problem that impedes entertainment, but you can avoid that with a cheaper game.

Expensive games must be savored for a long time, because most people cannot afford to buy a new game very often.  If you choose to pick up cheap PC games, then when you get tired of one, you can replace it without spending too much money.  By following this route, you not only save money, but you get to play more games than if you did not.

The PC games that are on the market today can be very demanding, not only on your wallet but your computer as well.  If your computer is not up to par, you will find that nearly all games you try to play will freeze up on you, and that is not something that anybody enjoys (especially during a multiplayer game).  You can avoid having your computer go out on you by making sure that it is up to date and fast.

That’s a lot easier said than done.  Thousands of people struggle with slow computers, and sometimes no matter what they try, things will not improve.  The first thing you can do to improve your computer speed is eliminate any spyware, malware, or viruses.  These things not only threaten your security, but they slow down your computer in all kinds of ways, including PC games.  There are many free programs you can download to combat this, but if you have some serious problems with your computer, you may need to pay for protection and high quality service.  If you believe this route would greatly enhance your computer’s speed, then go for it, but ultimately it comes down to the individual computer.

There are many computers that may be one hundred percent free of any viruses or bad programs, but they will still run games slow.  This is because they have a low amount of memory, a slow processor, or outdated graphics cards.  Addressing your computer’s hardware needs is the best way to make it go faster, because you are actually adding new capabilities to it.  If you could only buy one thing, your best option would be RAM.  This is random access memory, which essentially determines the speed of your computer.  Modern PC games can need two to four gigabytes of RAM to run in their optimal states, and most new computers nowadays come with that amount of RAM.  However, if you are using an older computer, it may only have a gigabyte of RAM, or perhaps even less.  That will not hold up for today’s games, so if you want to have any fun, you need to upgrade.

Besides the RAM, you can update the graphic and sound cards as well.  This will not have any effect on the speed, but it will make your games look and sound better.  For serious games, these amazing benefits are well worth the one-time costs.

Finding Cheap PC Games

Everybody wants cheap PC games, but the real challenge is actually finding them.  Games can cost upwards of forty or fifty dollars nowadays, and that can add up to a lot of money if you like to play a variety of games.  Thankfully, there are ways you can save money on your purchases, and possibly end up with some free games you did not even know about.

To find PC games, the first place you should check is your house.  We often forget about buys we have made if they occurred a long time ago, so there might be games lying around your house that are still playable.  Keep in mind, with this method of acquiring games it is virtually impossible to find anything new, and what you do come up with may be years old.  That does not mean the game will be any less fun, especially considering games from even five years ago were still quite technologically advanced.  Just don’t expect to find Halo 3 lying around in your drawer without you knowing about it.

The next place to go for cheap PC games is your friends.  We all know people who have games that they have either beaten or just do not want anymore.  If they have no desire to keep the game, they will have no problem selling it off, and probably for a much lower price than they bought it for.  In the case you are a very close friend to them, they might give it to you for free, or for a price that is ridiculously low.

If you cannot find any games around the house or from your friends, then you actually have to go out and buy them.  You can find deals from a multitude of sources.  The best place to find anything for cheap is eBay.  On eBay, people sell both used and new games, and sometimes they sell them in huge lots, so the price per game can be drastically lower than if you purchased the games individually.  If you take your time on eBay, you can find some really great deals that you did not know were out there, and when that happens, everybody wins.

At stores like Best Buy and Gamestop, you can often buy used games for low prices.  People come in to stores all the time to trade-in their old games, and you take advantage of those trade-ins by picking them up yourself.

Five Classic PC Games

Getting your hands on some cheap PC games is always a bargain, but a better deal is playing games for free.  By taking advantage of the free, classic games that you can download online, you can have a lot of fun while not spending a penny.

One of the most well known classics is Pac-man.  The game’s concept is to eat all of the dots on the board while avoiding the ghosts.  To make the game slightly more interesting, you can eat power pellets, which turn you in to the attacker, and of course there is the fruit that appears in the center of the map.  While the game is relatively simple, it is interesting enough to have occupied hundreds of hours of free time for people back in the 1980s.

Next is Galaga, the sequel to Galaxian (which is much less well known than Galaga).  In Galaga, you controlled a space ship and attacked a variety of space insects.  The most unique and memorable aspect of the game was having your ship captured by enemies, and then reclaiming your ship and utilizing double firepower.

Another classic PC game is Dig Dug.  This game is not as well known as the others, but it is extremely fun.  You take the role of Dig Dug, and you must eliminate monsters from underground.  They can be killed by being exploded or by having a rock dropped on them.  By using rocks, you can kill multiple enemies at once, which results in bonus points.

Nobody could ever forget Tetris, the famed block game.  Some people were so obsessed with Tetris they had dreams and visions of blocks falling in to place.  The premise of Tetris is simple; you must line blocks up in straight lines to make them disappear.  For something so seemingly easy, Tetris was surprisingly addictive and revolutionary.

Finally, there is Super Mario World.  While this is technically a Nintendo franchise, there was a computer version of it, and the game is just too classic to not mention.  The goal of this game is to save Princess Peach from Bowser, and to do so you must make your way through many worlds, each with their own unique aspects.  It seems that the premise of every Mario game is Bowser stealing Peach, so one wonders why Mario just doesn’t kill off the monster permanently.
